Modules not working properly

I have a setup with 13 GF modules which I used for many years with MS FS2004. Recently I decided to move to x-plane. Now I tried for many hours to run only the MCP (old small version) and the LGT. No success. I can dial the numbers on the MCP for the default 737 but they are not displayed on the module. And no button works. Nothing works on the LGT. As settings I used the default FS settings in the Interface tool. I also tried the GFwindows 8fixer according a hint in the forum (disconnect run, disconnect run etc). It is frustrating, something that worked a long time ago in a easy manner has become very complex. That does not reflect the usual development where everything becomes easier.

Kind regards,
Thomas (english is not my native language)

  • Hi Thomas:

You don't mention if you have installed the GoFlight Interface Tool for X-Plane, that is different from the one that is used for the Microsoft Flight Simulator or Prepar3d.

If you haven't, you have to purchase it and install it.
I did that when I switched to X-Plane (for a short while) and had no problems using my GoFlight set up.
    Regards,
    Roberto
  • Thank you Roberto.
Glad to hear that it runs with you.
Of course I have installed the GF Interface Tool for x-plane. As I said the two modules I started with are recognised by the tool (3 green lights) and I can open the corresponding tabs (MCP, LGT). However no led lights on the modules, but I can dial in the course, heading, speed, VS, alt and the figures show up in the airplanes MCP (default B737 in x-plane), however not on the module. The buttons do not work and no display on the GF MCP module. Regarding the LGT no lights, no reaction in the airplane (eg. gear up, flaps). Before I try with the rest of the modules (another 11) I Need to fix this.

    Specs:
    Win 10 64
    X-plane 11
    I7600
    Geforce 1080
    32GB RAM

  • Hi Thomas,

The first couple of things to check are:

    - The devices must be plugged into USB2 ports that includes the hub connected to the PC as well. There must not be any USB 3 connection anywhere in the chain that a GoFlight device is connected to.
    - Do the LED's light up when the device is clicked in GoFlights GFConfig or via GIT by clicking the Identify button. If they do not then you have the GoFlight driver issue that occurred from Windows 8 upwards. You need to run the Windows8Fixer.cmd as administrator. If that does not work, unplug the devices, run the Windows8Fixer.cmd again and then plug the devices back in. Repeat until it works.

Once the above has been addressed, start up GIT, click the FS Default button for the MCP. Quit GIT and restart it and the displays and lights should work. Remember that FS Default installs a basic set of X-Plane commands that may or may not work with every aircraft, you will need to tweak the settings as necessary.

Yes GIT appears complex and that's because it is designed to work with non standard as well as default aircraft. GoFlight's simple software only works with default or Simconnect compliant aircraft and they are far to simple for most people these days. Before GIT, the only route to interface to non standard/complex aircraft was to write several hundred lines of LUA code in FSUIPC for every aircraft and for each device you want to use - GIT simplifies this process to a few clicks of mouse.

  • Hi Steve

Thanks for your help but nothing worked. I give up, I do not have the time to spend hours or better said I don't t want spend hours. I understand your design approach to fullfil the needs of complex aircraft. However there was a time when I spent more in fixing and tweaking than flying. I even built a home cockpit. For some time I did not use the simulator anymore. Now I returned but did not want to go back to FSX or Prepar3d but try X-plane and especially Aerofly FS2 due to the new VR possibilities. I think Aerofly FS2 has a great potential. Start it an fly it with 120 frames, photoscenery. I dad hoped to be able to connect the GF instruments via GF Keys until maybe someone writes a proper interface. However GF Keys does not work anymore. So my intention is X-plane for more complex flying and Aerofly FS2 for VFR flying for the time being. But I am sure Aerofly FS2 can cover both one day.

  • Hi Steve

It's me again. I am still trying to get my GF modules running with the GF Interface Tool. I have done everything you proposed wih no luck. Attached is a screenshot showing what your programme shows on the stat tab. Maybe you can see anything. The GF config tool recognises the MCP modul. Also the GF interface tool recognises the GF modul. However nothing works when I push a button or dial a pot on the modul.

    Regards,
    Thomas
  • We need to start from the beginning. I assume you have checked for USB 2 connectivity?! Do the LED's work in GFConfig when the MCP is selected?

    Thx
    Steve
  • OK, from scratch. I have no LED light when selecting the modul in GF Config. However I can use the MCP in x-plane's default B737 but there is no feedback to the modul's display.
When I start up the pc the lights and displays correctly flash as in the past, soemone said this kind of domino effect, however the display do flash again just short before the desktop appears in the startup process. But the displays only and not the LEDs, sometimes two, three times in a row. Why this? Why is this triggered again in the startup process?

    Thanks für your help,
    Thomas
  • You need to turn off power management (Allow this computer to turn off this device should be unticked) for your GoFlight devices and any hubs connected to them in device manager and turn off USB selective suspend in Power Options via Control Panel.

If GFConfig is not lighting up your LED's, then GIT is not going to work either. You need to run the Fixer program until you see LED's lit in GFConfig.

  • I do not know which is the GF device. I attached a picture with the open where it says GoFlight virtual HID keboard. There I cannot change any power management as you can see. This tab is missing. There are others above: some HID konform and some USB Eingabegeräte. The HID konform have a power managment tab but the option is not clickable and with the USB Eingabegeräte the options are checked an clickable.

    Regards,
    Thomas
  • It will be a HID compliant device. If you look at the Windows8Fixer.log you will see the hardware ID of the devices found such as VID_09F3&PID_0064. You can match this to the hardware ID in the Details tab of the driver to find your MCP.

  • I could find two in the w8fixer one with -040 at the end and one with -060 at the end (see att.). However I could not find any corresponding number in the device manager. By the HID compliant devices I could anyway not check the power management box as they are not cklickable, greyed out in a way.

    Thomas
  • Focus on getting GfConfig to work the LED's using WindowsFixer.
  • Steve
I have done this w8fixer thing now about 30 times and no luck. I am frustrated and angry that only because I migrated to W10 my 13 GF modules do not work anmyore. I blame GF for not fixing this. I cannot believe that nowadays it is not possible to write drivers that work in a modern environment. Plug and Play was a hit in the 90ties but does not work anymore.

    Thanks für your help.

  • Hi Thomas,

There are loads of people using Windows 10 with GoFlight, myself included. Are you sure you haven't got it plugged into USB3?

  • Hi Steve

Not giving up, I admire that.
I am sure that I have plugged in a 2.0 USB Connection, at least it says that. It is a MSI Board Z170A Gaming M7. Is there any possibility to check whether it is really a 2.0 USB?

    Thanks,
    Thomas
  • Yes, I am sure. It is clearly labelled that it is a 2.0 usb connector.

I've just tested my MCP and it lights up OK with GFConfig on Win 10. I would escalate to GoFlight Support because I don't understand why it isn't working for you. I've gone through this process multiple times with other users and its always worked.

    Best wishes
    Steve

PS: Have you checked your MCP on another PC to make sure it isn't broken?
  • I have tried once with all my modules and none gets any feedback from x-plane. It is a one way street, from modul to x-plane. Will contact gf.

    Thanks,
    Thomas
  • I checked the registry with regedit and for the two modules i attached for tests power management is disabled. Hence the w8fixer did his job.
I then connected them to a w7 laptop where i installed the gf config prgrm, same problems.
I really think whether something happened to my modules, a power problem during a thunderstorm we had which damaged parts of a stereo. Also this occured some time ago I did not use the flightsim since then. Hence i did not realise. I wonder how i could verify that?

Thanks again for your very apreciated help.

    Thomas
  • On windows 7 with USB 2 they should work fine.

Only GoFlight could offer advice to you on damage - they may have some sort of test/diagnostic program.

    Best wishes
