How about a Training Course on sorting hardware - paid for by the participants?

I have been involved in Flight Simming for a number of years and have come to the conclusion that this is one of the only industries I know of that supplies expensive hardware that doesn't work straight out of the box!  It's almost like buying a new car and being told that you have to program the engine management system for yourself.  The result is that much time is spent on sorting out hardware, rather than getting on with the flying.

So, is there anyone who would be prepared to run a Training Course on using say FSUIPC or other proprietary software that would take the pain out of this process?  I realise that there is an exhaustive manual on FSUIPC but people have different learning processes and many learn by "seeing & doing" rather than by "reading".

I put this suggestion forward to help the industry as you only have to look at the flight sim forums to see that I am not the only one who struggles with this.

I would be more than prepared to pay for lessons.  Does anyone else share my feelings and is there anyone who could run a "paid-for" course?

Best regards
Adie

    Hi Adie,

I understand your frustrations. It is the main reason I wrote GIT. Although GIT is still fairly complicated, for me at least I no longer have to write huge LUA scripts in FSUIPC to get the MCP PRO to work. GIT cuts down development time by 80%.

I like your analogy, but the truth is if developers stuck with the Simconnect standards, your hardware would work seamlessly...but we would have rather poor and unrealistic add-ons. Realism means developing custom code and no hardware developer can pre-empt what a programmer may develop outside of an agreed standard. Its frustrating, but no pain, no gain.

I will be working on a new user guide which will be on-line shortly, once I have updated the Interface to be more user friendly. In the meantime, feel free to ask questions on the forum, I'll always try and help.

As regards training courses, what did you have in mind? Face to face or on-line?

    Best wishes

    Hi Steve,

Thanks for your prompt reply - I'm glad you liked my analogy!

I can understand the issues between the hardware manufacturers, the software developers and the end-users.  We're very lucky to have people like you in the centre of this melee who provide solutions.

I guess from my point of view there is the initial hurdle which is to gain the confidence to have a go at this without wrecking the system.  I am completely OK with computers having owned and used them for more years than I care to remember, starting with an original Apple with a huge memory of 64Kb.

So, I think that a face to face course would be the way to go as it gives people confidence by using a hands-on approach and the ability to ask questions and get answers in real time and in the context of the subject under discussion.  I am sure that a starter course would give people, like me, the confidence to continue on their own and increase their own ability.  I know that on-line learning is the latest technique but is almost like reading a manual and has no immediacy.

I like and own GoFlight MCP-Pro and EFIS modules but they drive me nuts!  For example, I use Level-D 767 - the MCP-Pro works most of the time but the EFIS never does.  I have had some conversations with you about this before.  I also use iFly 737 and both the GoFLight modules have the ability to select for use on iFly.  Neither will work at all!

I also own a VR Insight Instrument Radio Stack and a CDU.  They work much better than GoFlight but do not have the same quality.  They are, however much less fussy and work on all my aircraft.  I used to own a VR Insight MCP which also worked on all my aircraft.  Interestingly the VR Insight software will often activate the GoFlight modules!!!!

So, there it is.  I appreciate the great work that you do.  If you could organise a Training Course I, for one, would definitely attend and would be happy to pay.  I will await the new user guide for GIT and give that a whirl.

    My very best regards
    Adie

    Hi Adie,

I'm thinking about doing some video (youtube) tutorials - do you think that would be a reasonable compromise?

    Best wishes

    Hi Steve

I think anything visual would be good as that is how some people, me included, learn.  I'm not great with instruction manuals as I don't have the patience.
I used to carry out training and I only wish I knew this topic and could give you some assistance.  Maybe if I could get to understand things I might make a contribution.  I will try and get to grips with the GIT and what data is available at the moment.  By the way, I installed the update on my iFly 737 and it completely screwed up the whole thing so I guess I will have to restore the original version and continue with that.  Ho-hum!
    Best regards
    Adie
