GF-46 for X-Plane

Try as I might, I can't get this module to work. I fully programmed the GF-T8-2 tonight, works like a charm.

Regarding the GF-46, no luck whatsoever. I've followed the instructions in the GIT guide; however, the LED screen on the module is blank. Before trying to assign any functions to it I could press 'Identify' and it would flash D0 and 000000.

I've done the following...
1. On 46R tab, click the first option button, in the clockwise 'Non-pushed' event I selected 'GF45/46_TRANSPONDER_SET'.
2. On 460 tab, click "Enabled", click the first option button, type the Function Name "XPDR".
3. What do I select for the Display Data? And what should the display action/value be set to?

Evidently I'm missing something (since it won't work). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • What would be REALLY helpful is just a small example of how the mappings for events/variables are chosen to make this thing work. Maybe the actual function to be selected on the 46O tab?

Also, I should mention that "IDENTIFY" doesn't do anything once I've started setting up selections on the 46 O/R tabs.

  • If identify is not working, then the GF46 has locked up and that will be why GIT can do nothing with it. The GF46's and GF166's are notorious for doing this. Search this forum for the many threads on the subject and the various possible solutions.

Once you have the GF46 stabilised, see if the GF45/46_TRANSPONDER_SET works with a default aircraft and if not give me a shout.

  • Yeah, all I've seen is references to changing the write command times, etc. Won't that affect all the GoFlight components, not just the GF-46? And, what would be the ideal settings for those 2 scrollbars?
    Chris - GoFlight and X-Plane 11.
  • I unplugged the GF166 and it started having power. It still doesn’t work but at least I can get it to work halfway.

I’ve got the function name displaying and the transponder value displaying. However the events I’ve assigned to the pushed and non-pushed rotaries aren’t working. The bespoke events I’ve created and assigned DO work when I click the “test event” buttons. I’ll attach some screenshots and XML files for my module and bespoke events.

  • Also, when I have the GF166 plugged in at the same time as the GR46, one of them won't work. I'm guessing I need another powered USB hub despite the 1st one being powered.image

  • The issue is when you use the rotaries and the displays update. Can you try using the GF46 rotaries and if nothing happens, try the Identify button to check it hasn't locked up.

    Thanks
    Steve
  • I don't think it's locking up. I'm at work right now and can't click "identify", but I'm fairly sure that it's not locking up since it's fully functional in the simulator to GF-46 direction. It's only behaving as if the GF-46 to the simulator messages are not being sent.

With my current configuration, with my bespoke events assigned to the push in/out of the clockwise and counter-clockwise, the transponder in the simulator updates when I click the "test event" button.

Also, when I change the transponder values in the simulator the display on the GF-46 does change. In other words, clicking the "test event" causes the simulator to work. Also, changing the transponder in the simulator works. It's acting as if changes from the rotaries on the GF-46 doesn't cause the signal to be passed along to the GIT and then forwarded to the simulator. I.e. it's only working in one direction.

When I get home this evening I'll give it another try by clicking the "identify" button. I'll also included some screenshots of my configuration in GIT. Hopefully that'll help.

  • Using the test function rarely triggers the issue. Its when the rotary is actually being turned and the displays update that always seems to trigger the lock up if the hardware hasn't been stabilised.

  • Let's assume it's locking up. What would be the solution? Are we talking about changing the command delay sliders?
    Chris - GoFlight and X-Plane 11.
  • You can try that, but it rarely helps. Most success has come from disabling power management on the hubs and GFDevices in Windows and separating out the GF46's and GF166's onto separate hubs. Goflights advise is to use USB2 or USB1 hubs going back to USB2 or 1 ports on the PC. However some users have found them to be more reliable on USB3 although GoFlight say you should never use USB3 at all with their gear. Some BIOS settings that invoke legacy USB support can also help. Some particular hubs seem more successful than others - you can get that info from the various discussions in the forum. Its trial and error and your mileage may vary!

  • Ah! Turning off Windows 10 USB Hub Power Management could very well be it. I'm really hoping that could be the solution.

Regarding USB 1/2/3, my USB hubs are all 3.0. GoFlight's strange insistence on using outdated USB versions makes little sense as they are backwards compatible.

My USB hubs are AK-68ANHUB-B10A (10 port USB 3.0). I had one and ordered a 2nd one yesterday so that I can put the 166's and the 46 on different hubs.

  • For the past 3 months, I've been searching for a way to get the GF-46 to work consistently.

Tried everything I can find on the web - USB hub, USB 1-2-&3, SB pwr management,...etc.
All other GF products worked great with GIT. GF-46 some time worked and some time frozen mid flight, when I'm trying to use it to tune ADF, or some time frozen while changing to view different display. GF-46 would froze even if only program for XPDR.

I'm guessing the communication timing is off, used the GIT delay sliders to max, but still no improvement.

I wonder if GF-46 needed a separate plug-in to manage its connectivity with the Xplane...

Hopefully someone finds a repeatable solution.
  • I've given up on the GF-46. I have no problem whatsoever saying that is the crappiest piece of garbage ever made by GoFlight. I don't know how they can even sell it. I've tried to initiate a return but they've gone out of their way to ignore all my support requests and/or to contact them. Their support is just as crappy as their product. I'm wondering how other manufacturers, like Logitec can make components that work with X-Plane 100% of the time with no flaws or hiccups and GoFlight is making garbage.

  • It's just a theory, I have no evidence this is the case, but I think it may need a firmware upgrade as the MCP PRO used to lock up just like this until the A25 firmware came out. The readme in their drivers talks of a firmware upgrade programme, but I'm guessing it got forgotten due to personnel changes and so the GF46 never got an upgrade.

When I bought my GoFlight gear in 2008 using GoFlight supplied hubs, I had the MCP PRO locking up, both GF166 units locking up and the GF46 locking up and GIT didn't exist, all GoFlight supplied software and hardware. It drove me mad! In the end, power management, swapping out the hubs and spreading the gear around caused it settle down but it would still lock occasionally and the MCP PRO always locked until the new firmware came out. It took months of fiddling about to get it reasonably stable.

I have heard a lot of people complaining about lack of support at GoFlight. I know when John Krieg was their doing support, my experience of GoFlight support was very good. I haven't used GoFlight support recently so can't comment.

  • Hope there will be a firmware update on the GF-46 and resolve issues rendering the product useless.
I also hope the company is not going down. With many new competitors entering the market, their lack of responses and activities (at least from my perspective) can drive customers to alternatives.
  • I'm inclined to think they might be going out of business as well. What other reason did they have to sell all their stock at a bargain just before Xmas? I bought an MCP Pro, 2 166's, 1 T8 and the 46 all within a couple weeks and now they're down to basically nothing available. Also the one time they actually DID respond to me was to say that they weren't making any more consoles. So, that sounds to me like a company that is quitting.

  • Glad to see the announcement about GF being acquired by another company. There may be hope for some update to the GF-46 firmware.
  • When was this announcement? I'd love to finally get some real support. I guess it's a good thing I didn't throw my GF-46 across the room yet. :)

    Hi All,

I have struggled a lot with my panels (GF-45, GF-46, RP-48 and GF-P8) and the most with the 46 and 48. I had it working stable on win7 with XP 11.30. Build a new PC and went to Win10 and the ^%$^& started again. I am using separately powered USB hub.

So after a couple days i got it somehow stable. Couple tips which can be helpfull although i am not sure this solved it. The GF-46 by the way is very sensitive in terms of settings within git.

    - If possible use the supplied usb cables instead of other ones. With the 48 and P8 it is not a problem to use other usb cables but the ones with a display it gives sometimes problems.
    - Windows 10 power management: disabling the "USB selective suspend". Can’t measure it but i suspect windows to suspend a USB device when it is inactive for a time. So when you are busy with flight planning and don’t use the panels for a moment. Search with google for “How to disable USB selective suspend” in power profiles.
    - Increase the timers, especially write and cmd delay to prevend device locks. My work fine on 70 ms.

  • thanks Andrew. Honestly at this point I'm genuinely afraid to even try it. Every time I think I've got it all my other modules decide to take a dump. I always have to backup all the XML files so that WHEN it goes sideways I can get back to where I started.
    Chris - GoFlight and X-Plane 11.
  • Fully understand, don’t fix what isn’t broken. I backup everything even when changing 1 thing
  • The GF-46 was working for a while but today discovered during flight with ZIBO 3.33H and XP 11.31 again a blocking GF-46. Other modules continue to work. Restarting git or disconnecting the module didn’t help. I had disabled selective usb suspend in win10.
GIT is seeing the module as it states 1 in the module overview but turning knobs or push button, no reaction is seen in the status overview (green “indicators”)

Anyone a clue? Or share the settings?

    Thanks!

    Andre
  • Just patiently waiting for the new owners to surprise me with their awesomeness. :)
