GoFlight Modules do not work on USB 3.0+

Just a word of caution, if you upgrade or buy a new PC, despite USB 3.1 being backwards, GoFlight has acknowledged their hardware is not functional on USB 3.1. I have a new PC and all USB ports are 3.1. All my other hardware does work on 3.1. Hopefully they figure this out otherwise I have a $500 paperweight, lol.

  • GoFlight have known about this for years, so don't expect any change. They don't recommend USB 3, but they do work. Are you sure it's simply not a power management issue in Windows - you need it disabled on all USB hubs and ports and GoFlight devices. It can also be that you need to run Windows8Fixer (see the GoFlight drivers readme file for instructions)

  • I have worked with their techs and it is a No GO. Guess I will sell.
  • There are plenty of people on here using USB 3 including myself. Just buy a USB 2 hub if it's still an issue.

What @RayProudfoot suggested is exactly what I did a few months ago. My 1 year old computer has USB 3 and USB 3.1 ports. Using a USB 2.0 self powered hub connected to a USB 3.0 port got my two GF-166's as well as my GF-45 working just fine, but the MCP PRO and EFIS would not work properly (intermittent) while connected to a USB 3.1 port. So, I ended up purchasing and installing a 6 port USB 2.0 PCI-E card. Issue resolved.

Now these USB-2.0 cards do seem to get harder to find, so for those looking at building a new PC in the near future, I'd suggest picking one up while they are still available, and at a decent price. Just make sure to get one that will either fit on your current or future motherboard. Most motherboards will have a PCI-E slot, but just make sure to check the motherboard specs.
I'd rather spend $20-$25 on a USB 2.0 card than having to throw $1000 in hardware in the trash.

I just successfully setup my MCP+PRO and LGT-II last night through a powered USB3 Hub into the USB3 Port on my PC. Maybe you have a power issue? I had issues in the past with my MCP when I was running it off the PC port itself, so I bought a powered Hub.

I wonder what the factor is in some working and some not?
  • Gents. I'll be buying a new PC from Chillblast soon but wanted to clear up the problem of modern motherboards and their lack of USB2 ports. I rang Technical Support at Chillblast and explained the problem of requiring a minimum of 1 USB2 port preferably at the back of the case.

The technician searched Amazon and found this product.

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Xiatiaosann-Expansion-Bracket-Motherboard-USB2-0/dp/B098B13JP3/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

The bracket is attached to a spare expansion bracket and the power lead connects to a connector on the mobo. It looks like the ideal solution for those of us requiring support for the GF166s in particular.

As a follow-up and for clarification it's not just a power connector. It attaches to a USB2 header. So as long as the motherboard you're planning to use has USB2 headers this expansion bracket should be fine. I was thinking that if it was just a power connector how would the OS recognise any devices plugged in. Attached to a USB2 header is the answer.
